CV Guidance Notes

When purchasing a product, we are likely to choose the one with the most attractive packaging, even though the poorly packaged product may be equally as effective. The same is true for an employer short-listing candidates for interview. Your CV will be compared with others. How you are presented in it is critical to obtaining an interview. Your CV should be a review of your past experience, your saleable product. Yet, more than this, it must emphasise your achievements, strengths and abilities.

Considerable thought has gone into our CV style to ensure it is thorough, creates the right impact and fits in with the format expected by employers. If you have an existing CV, you can upload it onto this site. However, an existing CV will not necessarily be in the correct format and means employers cannot easily compare one CV with another. If uploading an existing CV, please make sure it provides a brief profile about the companies you have worked for... its size, number of employees, the markets it operates in, its products or services, etc. Remember that employers overseas are unlikely to be familiar with UK companies.

If electing to write a new CV via our CV Manager, please note that you are able to 'Copy and Paste' elements from an existing CV (Word Doc.) into our CV Manager.

Despite the correct format design within our CV Manager template, this alone will not guarantee great CV content. Only the writer can do that. Ensuring your CV is the best it can be is an investment in your future. There is no doubt that a CV written by our CV specialists is guaranteed to boost your job prospects like nothing else can. We strongly recommend you have your CV written by the experts at: www.CV.co.nz

Important: Your CV should be 2 pages, 3 at the most. Employers do not want manuscripts!

Career Profile

This should state your objective (ie: the type of position you seek) and also contain a Personal Summary of your key strengths and abilities. It must create an immediate impression. To achieve this, we recommend you use "action" words wherever possible.

Action words can play an important part in making an impact. Such words include:

Created Built Increased
Directed Improved Solved
Led Simplified Instigated
Implemented Completed Generated
Organised Expanded Performed

Your profile provides the opportunity to really sell yourself. By creating a positive first impression, the employer will want to know more about you and your career history.

Examples of Objective: Trade, Professional
Examples of Personal Summary: Trade, Professional

Career History: Responsibilities and Major Achievements

For each position held, you should highlight your responsibilities and major achievements. This provides the opportunity to impress an employer. They are best kept to 6 or 8, written as bullet points, again using action words. A good way of identifying them is to think of what you have done in your career to make you proud. These are major achievements. It can sometimes be difficult to separate achievements from normal expected duties. If so, think in terms of your 'Key experience'. IMPORTANT: Do not neglect your 'hands-on' experience which is greatly valued by employers. Too often, candidates emphasise their management experience at the expense of their practical skills, thinking this alone will impress employers.

Examples of Career History: Trade, Professional

For each position held, please provide a brief profile about the company, its size, number of employees, the markets it operates in, its products or services, etc. Remember that employers overseas are unlikely to be familiar with UK companies.
